Why a former forensic accountant trusts Strongpoint to manage complexity in NetSuite

“As a huge advocate of the product, I can’t say it more — it’s just so helpful!”

— Steven Sweet, ERP & Business Intelligence Leader

A former forensic accountant, Steven Sweet knows what it’s like to dig through mountains of data.

So when he shifted careers and began working with NetSuite, he knew how important it was to get the information he needed, quickly.

Sweet has been a dedicated Strongpoint fan ever since. He’s used our products in most of the 18 NetSuite implementations he’s been a consultant for. And when he started a new role at Regulus, a global capabilities enabler, he insisted that they use it, too.

Why? As Sweet puts it, “everyone I’ve talked to who has used Strongpoint is like, ‘Yeah that’s the industry standard.’”

We recently sat down with Sweet to talk about his experience with Strongpoint, and why he loves it so much. Here are a few highlights from our conversation.

Strongpoint comes into play just about every single time that I make a decision.

Using Strongpoint at Regulus Global

In eight years of NetSuite consulting, “I’ve seen good, bad and ugly,” Sweet told us. When he accepted a full-time position with Regulus, a global capabilities enabler, he inherited an instance that was highly customized — but not ready to take the next steps.

“It was great customization for when we were small, but for where we want to go, it has to be scalable and built to more normal processes.” Growth meant change, and making sure the company’s ERP systems could accommodate those changes required specialized tools.

“Strongpoint comes into play just about every single time that I make a decision.” With it, he can see at a glance how customizations are connected, and what the downstream effects will be when making a change.

Whether Sweet is deprecating a field or troubleshooting an error-prone script, “every single time I need to look at anything that’s been customized, I go right to the customization impact search form or ERD.”

Moving Beyond Institutional Knowledge

Sweet’s experience at Regulus is typical of many companies — and the root cause of it is an overreliance on institutional knowledge. If every admin or developer did things exactly the same way, even the most complex, customized accounts would be easy to understand.

But the reality is that everyone who works in NetSuite has their own way of doing things — and when they move on to a new opportunity, they take their highly personalized understanding of the system with them.

“There are so many onion layers,” Sweet told us. “Just being able to tell the differences and being able to have it all upfront, for a developer that’s key.”

And that's just what Strongpoint does.

Best of all, going forward, he’s got tools at his disposal that will keep Regulus' account clean and manageable — eliminating unused saved searches and other technical debt that compounds the problem by making things harder to understand.
